The sensor nodes in NetSim WSN/IoT modules have an infinite buffer by default and hence buffer overflows will not occur.

However, if you wish to model buffer overflows, it can be achieved by modifying the property XML file associated with the sensor's Zigbee interface.

Follow the steps given below to introduce buffer and scheduling in the sensor nodes:

  • Close all running instances of NetSim.
  • Go to the NetSim install directory path <NetSim_Install_Directory>\Docs\xml\Properties. For e.g. "C:\Program Files\NetSim\Standard_v13_0\Docs\xml\Properties
  • Rename the existing InterfaceProperty.xml file to say InterfaceProperty_backup.xml, as a backup.

  • Download the attached modified InterfaceProperty.xml file and paste it into the same location.

  • Now upon creating any new network scenarios involving sensors, in WSN/IoT modules the buffer and scheduling related parameters can be configured in the devices' Zigbee Interface properties as shown below:

  • The metrics associated with the device buffers can be found as part of the Queue metrics in NetSim Simulation Results Dashboard which includes parameters such as packets queued, dequeued as shown below:
  • If there is a buffer overflow in any of the nodes packet drops can be observed in the Queue metrics as shown below:
