Applicable Releases
v13.1

In the COTS version of NetSim wired nodes have an infinite buffer. A finite buffer, per a user-selectable size (in Bytes), can be added by modifying the underlying property XML file associated with the Wired Node interface.

Follow the steps given below to introduce buffer and scheduling in the wired nodes:

  • Close all running instances of NetSim.
  • Go to the NetSim install directory path <NetSim_Install_Directory>\Docs\xml\Properties. For e.g. "C:\Program Files\NetSim\Standard_v13_1\Docs\xml\Properties
  • Rename the existing InterfaceProperty.xml file to say InterfaceProperty_backup.xml, as a backup.
  • Download the attached modified InterfaceProperty.xml file and paste it into the same location.
  •  Now upon creating any new network scenario involving wired node the buffer and scheduling related parameters can be configured in the devices' Interface (Ethernet)' properties as shown below:
  • The metrics associated with the device buffers can be found as part of the Queue metrics in NetSim Simulation Results Dashboard which includes parameters such as packets queued, dequeued as shown below:
  • Metrics associated with Queuing and packet drops in the node can be obtained from the Queue Metrics table as shown below:
  • If the Buffer Occupancy Plot option is enabled, then the Buffer plots can be accessed from the results dashboard and viewed as shown below:

Warning: These are changes to NetSim system files. They do not get automatically configured during the upgrade (involving the export of workspace from the old version followed by an import into the new version). The same changes need to be re-done if and when upgrading.
